Man charged with girlfriend's death

IOWA CITY (KWWL) - A suspicious death investigation in Johnson County has led to murder charges.

26-year old Eric Scott Osborn is charged in the death of his girlfriend, 34-year old Sarah McKay, who was found dead Sunday in an Iowa City mobile home. An autopsy performed Tuesday found she died from head and neck injuries. Court documents reveal that McKay and Osborn spent a night together with no signs of violence, and then it took a sudden and tragic turn.

"We're still collecting information. We're still talking to people," said Johnson County Sheriff Lonny Pulkrabek, in a media conference Wednesday afternoon. He declined to go into the details of what happened in the early morning hours of March 7th.

According to court documents, the Johnson County Sheriff's department arrived at McKay's residence, 18 Expo Drive, around 9:30 Sunday night. They found McKay dead, and Osborn bleeding from his neck and arms. Osborn proceeded to tell investigators that he and McKay had been gambling and drinking early Sunday morning. He says they then smoked marijuana, took some pills, and played videogames, before going to bed to have sex.

What happened next, and why, is still a mystery, according to Osborn. Osborn says he picked up a baseball bat and hit McKay on the head, then choked her. He then took valium pills, drank alcohol, cut himself, drank bleach, and tried to hang himself, in an attempt to kill himself. Osborn says he then passed out, and called his mother when he woke up.

As of Wednesday, Osborn was recovering at the University of Iowa Hospital.

"We will be watching him continuously until he's released," said Sheriff Pulkrabek.

He'll then stay in the Johnson County Jail, his bail set at $1,000,000.

BJ Franklin with the Horizons Survivors Program spoke on behalf of the McKay family on Wednesday. They say they're relieved that the investigation resulted in a 1st-degree murder charge, and that they request their privacy continue to be honored. Funeral services for McKay will be held Saturday in Iowa City. That will be at 4 PM at the Gay and Ciha Funeral Home. Family members are requesting anyone in attendance wear something pink in memory of Sarah.
