Tipton native helps bring Cirque du Soleil to Iowa

CEDAR RAPIDS (KWWL) -- An eastern Iowa native is working behind the scenes on Cirque du Soleil's Alegria show.   The show opened Wednesday in Cedar Rapids.

"Here I am six years later back in Iowa," Tipton native Mike Newnum said after working several days setting up in the U.S. Cellular Center.

Newnum is an assistant production manager for Cirque du Soleil.  That means he helps coordinate things between the show and the facility.  One example: the traveling show brings its own washers and dryers.  That means specific water and power needs.

The show brings its own equipment to take special care of costumes.  The costumes are custom made in Montreal, Canada and require constant upkeep.

Aside from the show, Newnum has enjoyed being close to his family this week.

"Been driving back and forth each day to Tipton to see my family and definitely having them come this week to see the show as well," Newnum said.

Alegria runs through Sunday.  At last check, there are still plenty of tickets available.  Click here for ticket information.
