Ames over CR Washington in 4A State Tournament


DES MOINES (KWWL) -- No one gave Cedar Rapids Washington much of a chance against top ranked and defending 4A Ames. The Little Cyclones haven't lost in two years and boasts the best player in the nation in Harrison Barnes. But Washington with a surpassing performance, that made this match up worth watching till the end.

Ames would jump ahead early outscoring Wash 14-7 in the first quarter. But the Warriors held on with shots like Josh Oglesby's three pointer in the second. That was three of his 15 points. It would make it a two point game.

Ames returns the favor on a rebound from Barnes, it's just two of his 29 points. Ames up 22-18 at the break.

"The first half we played well. I thought we could have illuminated offensive rebounds a little more. I think we would have been ahead at half-time," said Josh Oglesby.

In the second half the Little Cyclones lead by Washington gets two on this steal. Wes Washpun put up two points, Washington trailed 29-22.

But Barnes was unstoppable in the second half. Washington would hold on as Oglesby puts up a three point shot. But it wouldn't be enough for Ames. The Little Cyclones win it by 13 points, 57-44.

"It's puts us in situations where we can't be sloppy with the basketball and it makes every possession count," said Harrison Barnes when asked how he felt about winning the game by just 13 points. The Little Cyclones were expected to win by a long shot.

"It's just the perfection that's needed to make it through 32 minutes. The stops that's what you need over long course of time. But I'm incredible proud with how are we played but not only that, the competitive nature that they put on for us. It was a good basketball game," said head coach Brad Metzger.
