Another red light camera goes active in Cedar Rapids

CEDAR RAPIDS (KWWL) -- A third red light camera is up and running ready to catch those breaking the law in Cedar Rapids.

The newest camera, at 2nd Avenue and 6th Street SW, went live on Monday and is the third of 10 fixed cameras that will be installed.

The other two that are currently working are at 1st Avenue and 10th Street SE and 2nd Avenue and 10th Street SE.

The Cedar Rapids Police Department says the three cameras have caught 203 violations between February 14 and March 9.

Those violations were approved by Gatso USA, but 12 were rejected by the Cedar Rapids Police.

The 191 that were approved were sent to the vehicle owners along with a warning letter.

The 30-day grace period for the cameras ends on March 14, 2010 for all cameras.  That means when a new camera becomes active after March 14, no grace period will be given.

The Cedar Rapids Police Department is putting out a brochure about the cameras.  You can see it by visiting www.cedar-rapids.org/police/.
