Local students will do battle with math skills

CEDAR FALLS (KWWL) -- Local students will test their math knowledge to win a place in this year's State Math Bee.

The 2010 AEA 267 Regional Math Bee is scheduled for Friday, March 12 in Cedar Falls.  About 140 students from eleven school districts are planning to attend the annual event.

Teams of four students compete in three team rounds and five individual rounds to win the top prize.  The math problems focus on several subjects, including patterns and functions, geometry, probability, statistics, and problem solving.  The only requirement for participation, is for the student to be in sixth grade and love math.

"The AEA 267 Math Bee is an opportunity to engage sixth grade students in solving a variety of math problems in a setting outside of their school. It's a challenging and fun event that develops teamwork and fosters mathematical thinking and skills," said AEA 267 Mathematics Consultant, Jeff Struck.

The top ten teams receive prizes and recognition.  The top three teams and top three individuals will qualify for the State Math Bee.  That competition is scheduled for Friday, May 7, 2010 in Fort Dodge.
