House passes bill regulating mixed martial arts competitions

DES MOINES (KWWL) -- State lawmakers are moving ahead with a bill to increase regulation of mixed martial arts events.  The Iowa House gave unanimous approval to an amended version of a plan to improve the safety of organized fights in the state.

The bill requires promoters to have a physician present for events.  It also mandates participants to be 18 years of age or older and have undergone a physical examination.

These requirements would apply to any mixed martial arts event which is open to the public and requires an admission fee or donation.

The House amendment expanded the qualifications to include events where merchandise or refreshments are available for purchase.

The bill goes back to Senators for further debate.
