National Problem Gambling Awareness Week

WATERLOO (KWWL) -- The Iowa Department of Public Health is marking National Problem Gambling Awareness Week by reminding Iowans to be responsible with their money.

The awareness week is observed March 7 - 13.  The IDPH and the Iowa Lottery sent letters to retailers last week with information on gambling treatment and education.  The materials ask retailers to check photo ID's for lottery customers to ensure they are complying with state law.

An IDPH study from 2008 found 3 percent of 6th, 8th, and 11th grade boys have won or lost more than $100 in a single day on some form of gambling during the past year.  Officials say it's an indicator of the presence of a gambling problem.

The IDPH has the following advice for responsible gambling.

· Don't think of gambling as a way to make money.

· Only gamble with money you can afford to lose.

· Set a money and time limit whenever you gamble.

· Never chase losses.

· Don't gamble when you are depressed or upset.
