New CBHS Adoption Center in final stages

WATERLOO (KWWL) The Cedar Bend Humane Society's new adoption center should be open to the public in late spring.

"We don't really have an opening date yet. We're just finishing up on some construction items, but we do hope to be in there by the first of May," said CBHS Co-Director Kristy Gardner.

Once animals are cleared for adoption, they'll come to the new center while they wait for a "forever home."

There are three cat rooms... one just for kittens... kennels for small and large dogs, a nursery for puppies, a grooming facility and a small retail store.

"This building will also be for the public to come, for our volunteers to come, for families to come enjoy the animals. The other facility will be used for holding the strays, for animal control services," said Gardner.

Humane society co-directors Kristy Gardner and Karla Beckman said while people initially think of animals when they hear the words "humane society," they also want the public to feel welcome.

"We really wanted to provide a place for the community to come and enjoy the animals and that's very important for the homeless animals because they do need the support of the community," said Gardner.

"We're just excited to have our grand opening and we want everyone to come out and see the shelter and enjoy the shelter and see the animals in their new homes since so many did support it," said Karla Beckman.

Last year, the humane society took in about 10,000 animals. The old facility was built to accommodate only 3,000.

This new center will help keep up with demand, but also hopefully help increase adoptions. Later this spring, people will be able to tour the facility during several open houses. Dates haven't been set yet.
