Allen's Skilled Nursing Unit closing next month

WATERLOO (KWWL) - A changing trend in hospital care is impacting Waterloo nurses.

Allen Hospital will close it's Skilled Nursing unit next month. This temporary care facility focuses on rehabilitation and getting patients prepared to return home. Hospital officials say they're trying to find new positions for thirteen full time and twelve part time nurses.

"We anticipate by closing skilled nursing this year alone we will save all most one million dollars. When you're looking at trying to take care of your acute care business first and skilled nursing facility second you really have to look a that and say a million dollars going back into acute care is a lot of money," says Jim Waterbury, Allen Hospital Media Relations.

Patients will still be able to choose a number of temporary care facilities in the Cedar Valley.

Allen is the 13th hospital to close it Skilled Nursing Facility as more patients request in-home care.
