Oh Baby! The breastfeeding decision

WATERLOO (KWWL) -- Teenie Schellhorn's hands are full. She gave birth to twin girls December 28th. She is busy with a four-year-old and two-year-old as well.

This new mom has committed to breastfeeding because she believes it's the best thing to do.

"I just think it's best for baby," said Shellhorn. "It's a lot of work, a huge commitment, but I breastfed my first two. It's better for immunity and preventing disease later in life."

Covenant Medical center lactation nurse Susan Wirtjes says the benefits of breastfeeding are monumental.

"We knew breastfeeding prevents breast cancer, SIDS, leads to fewer ear infections, roto virus & RSV," said Wirtjes. "There are so many protectants that one little teaspoon of colostrum the first day of life has 3 million virus and bacteria killers and so I'll tell new parents, 'Hey even if you only try it once, and give them 3 million bacteria killers, it's wonderful.' What a wonderful gift."

Nursing her twins takes plenty of time for this busy mom, but Schellman says she wouldn't have it any other way.
