Mother of Speaker Pat Murphy Dies at age 90



Eileen G. (Heitz) Murphy, well know Democratic activist and mother of Iowa Speaker of the House, Pat Murphy, died Sunday night at age 90, following a short illness.

Funeral services are pending at the St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Dubuque for Eileen G. (Heitz) Murphy, 90, of Dubuque who died Sunday night after a brief illness.
A longtime community activist and Democratic Party volunteer in Dubuque, she is the mother of Oelwein Mayor Larry Murphy and Speaker of the Iowa House of Representative Patrick Murphy.
The Egelhof, Siergert & Casper Funeral Home (2659 John F. Kennedy Road, Dubuque -- 563-556-0776) is in charge of arrangements. Visitation at the Egelhof, Siegert & Casper Funeral Home on 2659 Kennedy Road from 3-7 p.m. Wednesday and a Funeral Mass at St. Patrick's Cathedral at 1425 Iowa Street in Dubuque, 9:30 a.m. Thursday. Burial will be in the Mount Calvary Cemetery in Dubuque. 
Mrs. Murphy spent considerable time in her retirement from homemaking as a volunteer at the Dubuque Rescue Mission, Dubuque Food Pantry, St. Joseph Catholic School and St. Patrick Catholic School. She was admitted into the Dubuque County Democratic Hall of Fame several years ago for her volunteer work in elections. She was known for making literally thousands of phone calls on behalf of local, statewide and presidential candidates.
She was born May 6, 1919 in Farley, IA, the son of Matt and Agnes Heitz. She died from complications from pneumonia Sunday night at Mercy Health Center in Dubuque. She married Lawrence J. (Larry) Murphy July 3, 1939 at St. Raphael's Cathedral in Dubuque. He preceded her in death in 1991.  
She is survived by five sons: Larry (Linda) of Oelwein, David (Becky) of Dubuque, Bob (Theresa) of Midland, Texas; Patrick (Therese) of Dubuque and Joseph (Edie) of North Lake, IL.; three daughters: Margaret (Jeff) Murphy-Sweetland of Milwauke, Wis.; Madonna (Richard) Hefel of Bernard and Dolores (Jerry) Dilger of Marion and 31 grandchildren, including Brian Murphy of Oelwein and Jaymie (Julie) Murphy of Redondo Beach, CA., and David of San Francisco, CA.; and 19 great-grandchildren, and a nephew, Gene Heitz, Aurora.
