UPDATE: Funding runs out in appliance rebate program

Posted: Updated:

WATERLOO (KWWL) -- The state says all money in the appliance rebate program has been allocated, while many Iowans say they were never able to apply.

Iowa residents could file for a rebate online or by phone beginning at 8 a.m. on Monday. The Web site to register for a rebate, www.IowaApplianceRebate.com, was functioning as of Sunday night. But when consumers went to log on Monday morning, the site was unavailable, and calling the toll free number resulted in a busy signal. The phone number is 1-877-267-7495.

On it's Web site, the Iowa Office of Energy Independence confirmed problems with both the Web site and toll free phone number Monday morning. Monday afternoon, an update was posted reporting that rebates were being issued as quickly as possible by Helgeson Enterprises, Inc., a contractor handling the rebate program for the state.

Late Monday afternoon, the state office updated its Web site to say that all funds in all categories had been used and remaining applicants would be put on a waiting list.

About 9,000 Iowans were expected to receive a rebate on approved appliances. The rebates were given on a first come, first served basis.
