Iowa lawmakers focus on budget

DES MOINES (KWWL) - Hundreds of measures introduced in the Legislature will die this week as another deadline passes and lawmakers focus on writing a $5.3 billion budget.

The Friday deadline for approving bills is intended to limit the number of issues facing legislators in the closing weeks of the session.

That will clear the way to concentrate on the final details of the budget.

In a move to cut costs and balance the budget, legislators are expected to give final approval to a measure expected to save $127 million by merging smaller state agencies, streamlining larger ones, and centralizing computer operations and purchasing systems.

Also this week, legislators will meet to discuss a measure restricting motorists from sending text messages while driving. The House and Senate have passed different versions.
