Indiana State Women snaps UNI's Six Game Winning Streak 70-62

The University of Northern Iowa women's basketball team trimmed a 10-point second-half deficit to one but could never close the gap in a 70-62 loss at Indiana State in Missouri Valley Conference action Friday night in the Hulman Center. The loss snaps UNI's six-game win streak.

Jacqui Kalin led UNI with 24 points, and Lizzie Boeck finished with nine points and a career-high 15 rebounds.

Kelsey Luna led ISU with 23 points and nine rebounds. Shannon Thomas notched a double-double with 14 points and 11 rebounds for the Sycamores.

Indiana State used an 8-0 run to turn a 13-11 deficit into a 19-13 lead with 7:23 left in the first half. Jacqui Kalin hit a three at 3:20 to cut the ISU lead to 21-20, but the Sycamores scored the final five points of the half to take a 26-20 lead into the break.

The Sycamores made four of their first five shots in the second half to stretch their lead to double digits, 37-27 at 16:23.

Rachel Madrigal made a three off an assist from Boeck to cut the ISU lead to seven. She drove into the lane and made a layup on the Panthers'

next possession to pull UNI within five, 37-32, with 14:45 left. Kalin drained a three to pull the Panthers within a pair, 37-35 with 12:21 on the clock.

Kelsey Cooley made a pair of free throws on ISU's next trip down to bring it back to a two-possession game, 39-35. Kalin hit another three on the next trip to make it a one-point game, 39-38, with 12:10 on the clock.

With the Sycamores leading 43-42, Luna drained a three from the left baseline to extend ISU's advantage to 46-42, and Deja Maddox hit a jumper to put ISU in front by six with 7:04 on the clock.

Nicole Clausen hit a three from the right baseline to cut the UNI deficit in half, 48-45 with six minutes to play.

Indiana State scored four straight points to take a 52-45 lead at 4:25.

Boeck got a pair back when she hit two free throws, but Shannon Thomas hit a layup to put ISU back in front by seven.

Kalin hit a pair of free throws, and K.K. Armstrong grabbed a steal on the Panther press. Clausen scored on the turnover, cutting the ISU lead to 54-51 with 1:53 to play. Luna hit a three at 1:25 and a pair of free throws at 1:06 to stretch the ISU advantage to 59-51.

The Panther defense came up with another steal, and Kalin made a free throw with 57 seconds left to pull the Panthers within five.

After Luna made three of four free-throw tries to extend ISU's lead to eight, Kalin hit her fifth three of the game to bring it back to a five-point game with 28 seconds left.

UNI sent Cooley to the free-throw line, and she connected on both attempts to give ISU a seven-point lead. Boeck followed with a three to bring the score to 64-60 with 18.6 seconds left, but that was as close as the Panthers would get in the loss.

The Panthers shot 33.3 percent (24-of-72) from the floor, including

9-of-33 (27.3 percent) from three-point range. UNI made five of seven

(71.4 percent) free-throw tries.

Indiana State shot 44.9 percent (22-of-49) from the floor, including 5-of-10 (50 percent) from behind the arc. The Sycamores were 21-of-25 (84.0 percent) from the free-throw line.

UNI outrebounded Indiana State, 40-38. UNI committed 11 turnovers, resulting in 10 ISU points. The Panthers turned ISU's 13 turnovers into 10 points.

The Panthers return to action on Sunday when they play at Illinois State at 2 p.m.
