Theatre Cedar Rapids reopens downtown

CEDAR RAPIDS (KWWL) --  It's a sign of progress for a downtown that still continues to recover after 2008's floods.

Friday night's grand reopening of Theatre Cedar Rapids in its downtown location comes earlier than expected.

"It was unreal, the damage was catastrophic, you would have never imagined this quickly we would have been back if you had been in here," managing director Casey Prince said.

More than 20 months after a flood that devastated the city, this downtown staple is back stronger than ever.

Features like a renovated auditorium, an expanded lobby, a lounge with exposure to heavily traveled First Avenue, and a digital marquee were all designed with a larger vision in mind.

"I'm just excited we're going to get a ton of people downtown on a regular basis, hopefully have a positive impact not just on ourselves, but on a lot of businesses, and I just want it to feel electric down here," Prince said.

And when the doors finally reopen...

"I think people are going to be so thankful to be downtown by the hundreds having fun," Prince said.

Theater Cedar Rapids will reopen with showing of "The Producers."  Tickets are sold out Friday night but still available for the rest of the weekend.
