Solon man charged with attempted murder in Iowa City

IOWA CITY (KWWL) -- Dakota Lee Williams, 18 of Solon, has been charged with Attempted Murder after police say he forced his way into an apartment on North Dodge Street Thursday night.

Police were called to 906 North Dodge Street, apartment #3, at around 8:27 p.m. Thursday night on a report that a man had been shot.

The 27-year old male told officers that he answered a knock at his door to find a man dressed in black with a bandana across his face, holding a handgun.

He says the man pointed the gun at the him, forced his way into the apartment and demanded money.

The victim then told police that a struggle ensued when he resisted.

He says that during the struggle, the man pointed the gun at his head and told him he was going to shoot him if he did not give up the money.

The victim the told police that the gun went off during the struggle and he was shot in both of his hands.

The intruder then fled, leaving the gun at the apartment.

An Iowa City Police K-9 unit tracked the suspect to where police believe he got into a vehicle and fled.

The victim told police he knew the man that forced his way into the apartment.

Police, with the help of other individuals, were able to identify the man as Dakota Lee Williams.

While looking for Williams in Solon, Iowa City Police officers and Johnson County Sheriff's deputies found him breaking into vehicles.

Williams is charged with Attempted Murder, Burglary in the 1st Degree, Going Armed with Intent, five counts of Burglary to a Motor Vehicle and Interference with Official Acts.

The victim was transported to the University of Iowa Hospital and Clinics for treatment of non-life threatening injuries.
