Former Benton Community School teacher surrenders license

BENTON COUNTY (KWWL) -- A former teacher in the Norway and Benton Community School Districts has permanently surrendered his license after the Iowa Board of Educational Examiners has charged him with the abuse of a student.

The IBEE received a complaint about Walter Drahozal, a sixth grade teacher from 1980 until January 2006, on August 27, 2009.

They charged Drahozal with student abuse by committing or soliciting any sexual or otherwise indecent act with a student or any minor by soliciting, encouraging or consummating a romantic or otherwise inappropriate relationship with a student.

They also charged him with unethical practice by failing to make reasonable efforts to protect the health and safety of the student or creating conditions harmful to student learning or by conducting professional business in such a way that practitioner repeatedly exposes students to unnecessary embarrassment or disparagement.

The voluntary surrender of Drahozal's license was accepted by the IBEE on February 4, 2010.
