Former Oelwein teacher has license suspended for marijuana use

OELWEIN (KWWL) -- A former Oelwein music teacher must attend counseling and has had her license suspended for a year for using marijuana.

Jacalyn Ratcliff taught elementary music in Oelwein from October 5, 1984 until her resignation was accepted on October 27, 2008.

The Iowa Board of Educational Examiners found that Ratcliff had receive a deferred judgement for Possession of a Controlled Substance.

Ratcliff admitted that she had used marijuana and sought treatment for a medical condition.

She also admitted that using marijuana to treat her medical condition was in violation of professional boundaries.

Ratcliff will attend individual counseling and make quarterly reports to the Board of Educational Examiners beginning March 1, 2010.

Her teaching license is suspended for one year.
