Maquoketa Valley teacher ordered to counseling

Posted:

DELHI (KWWL) -- A Maquoketa Valley teacher has been ordered to attend counseling for having an inappropriate relationship with a student.

A complaint was filled with the Iowa Board of Educational Examiners against Steve Smith, a biology teacher and track coach at Maquoketa Valley High School since August 2003, on March 26, 2009.

An investigation determined that Smith had solicited, encouraged or consummated an inappropriate relationship with a student.

Smith admitted that allowing a friendship with a student was inappropriate and was in violation of professional boundaries.

He has agreed to attend counseling and make quarterly reports to the Board of Educational Examiners on a quarterly basis beginning March 1, 2010.

Smith has also agreed not to return to teaching or coaching until his counselor determines that he is fit to return to teaching and can maintain appropriate relationships with students.

If Smith does not comply with the order, his license will be suspended for no less than a year.
