Odor controls at DM rendering plant

Posted:

DES MOINES (KWWL) - Downtown Des Moines may not smell quite so bad on hot nights this summer.  Authorities say changes are on the way for Darling International's south side rendering plant that has taken a lot of heat for the putrid smells it sometimes releases during the warm weather.  Without any official ruling from the city, Darling has announced several improvements to help reduce rendering odors.  The company says it will install a new computer system to continuously monitor odor controls. It's updating air scrubbers to better filter odors, and those scrubbers will also get better controls.  Most of the improvements won't be completed until July. Until they are finished, no one is clear whether it will pass the sniff test.
