WATERLOO (KWWL) -- The field of sixteen applicants has been narrowed to just five finalists for the job of Waterloo Police Chief. Two veteran Waterloo Police Captains are among those five finalists for the job, following the January retirement of former Waterloo Police Chief, Tom Jennings. The other three finalists are from out of state.

Waterloo Mayor Buck Clark says the five finalists will all be in town next Wednesday and Thursday, March 3 and 4. Mayor Clark will ultimately make a recommendation to the Waterloo City Council, though Mayor Clark has the final say. It's hoped Waterloo's new Police Chief will be named by April 1.

The five finalists include:

Waterloo Police Captain and Interim Police Chief, John Beckman. Beckman joined the Waterloo Police Department in 1975 and became a Captain in 2001 in charge of the WPD Patrol Division.

Waterloo Police Captain, Tim Pillack. Pillack joined the Waterloo Police Department in 1979. He was promoted to Captain in 2002, and is currently in charge of the investigative division.

Daniel Trelka has been Chief of Police in Sturgeon Bay, Wisconsin for the past eight years. He has been a member of that department since 1992.

Todd Miller is the former Chief Police in Terrell, Texas. Miller has 32 years of Police Chief experience. He was the Terrell Police Chief for five years before his recent resignation there.

David Leonardo is a former Police Chief in Peoria, Arizona and Ardmore, Oklahoma. He has 35 years of law enforcement experience. Leonardo got a no-confidence vote from the Ardmore Police Union after just two years as the Ardmore Chief.

The five finalists will meet for one hour individually with the Waterloo Police Protection Association members late afternoon on March 3. Those meetings are scheduled as a ‘Meet and Greet with the WPPA,' and the order has Tim Pillack at 3:00 PM; John Beckman at 4 PM; Daniel Trelka at 5:00 PM; Todd Miller at 6:00 PM and David Leonardo at 7:00 PM.

Waterloo Human Resources Director, Bob Stringer, says the five finalists will begin a long day of interviews and tours of the City of Waterloo on March 4. The finalists will be interviewed by a Human Resources Committee, which includes Director Stringer and six other individuals, including Cedar Falls Police Chief, Jeff Olson, Tim Luce, Chairman of the Civil Services Commission and Randy Chapman, President of the Waterloo Police Protective Association. Mayor Buck Clark will also meet privately with each of the five Police Chief candidates.

Again, mayor Buck Clark will have the final say and hopes to name the new Waterloo Police Chief by April 1.
