Iowa Department of Human Services braces for cuts

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) -- The director of the Iowa Department of Human Services has told his staff to brace for big cuts -- depending on what lawmakers do with the state budget.

Charlie Krogmeier says the agency may have to cut 500 jobs, close wards at some institutions and handle fewer adoptions.

Krogmeier told his staff in an e-mail on Friday that that's the worst case scenario, but significant changes are expected.

Democratic legislative leaders say their budget for the next fiscal would cut spending for health and human services by $173 million. The target is $954 million, compared with the current budget of $1.1 billion.

Krogmeier says of the 500 positions that cut be eliminated, 60 percent would be from field operations.
