Oelwein losing a school

OELWEIN (KWWL) - Harlan Elementary is closing in Oelwein.

After years of dropping enrollment, Superintendent Jim Patera says the district must trim $700,000 from the budget.

There was a lot of discussion over the tough decision Monday night, but the Board voted 6-1 to close Harlan. Superintendent Patera says this will save about $70,000 a year.

"They know cuts have to happen but they don't want it to impact them, their neighborhoods, their children and I understand that. It's a tough situation," said Patera. "This is a tough time for Board Members to have to make some tough decisions that are not popular in a community, but we have to do what we have to do to maintain a tight budget in a tough economic time."

About 100 Harlan students will move to Wing's Park Elementary beginning next year.
