UNI Welcomes Biblical Scholar Dr. Obery Hendricks, Jr.

Dr. Obery M. Hendricks, Jr. is viewed as one of America's most innovative and radical Biblical scholars. Dr. Hendricks is a minister, speaker, activist and former Wall Street investment executive. He is currently Professor of Biblical Interpretation at New York Theological Seminary. Of Dr. Hendricks, renowned Princeton Professor Cornel West says, "Obery Hendricks is not just on the cutting edge, he is the knife!"

This Thursday, February 25, you will have a unique opportunity to hear Dr. Hendricks speak in person. He will bring his dynamic message to the University of Northern Iowa, as part of UNI's focus on Black History Month.

His 7 PM presentation will be held at the Maucker Union, in The UNI Center for Multicultural Education.  http://www.uni.edu/cme/  His speech is entitled: Savings Our Selves (SOS): Haiti, Katrina and Other Modern day Dilemmas.

This Status of African Americans Black History Month event is being made possible by the University of Northern Iowa in partnership with the Iowa Commission on the Status of African Americans. http://www.humanrights.iowa.gov/saa/index.html.

Dr. Hendricks has authored two books of critical acclaim. His novel, Living Water, was selected as Best Christian Fiction novel of 2003 by Black Issues Book Review. His latest book, The Politics of Jesus, has been called "an instant classic" which "immediately thrusts Hendricks into the front ranks of American religious thinkers," writes social critic, Michael Eric Dyson.

The Dictionary of Biblical Interpretation calls his work, "the boldest post-colonial writing ever seen in Western Biblical studies." Dr. Hendricks is also a regular contributor and featured writer for www.Faithfuldemocrats.com and www.Godspolitics.com.

The Thursday night presentation at The UNI Center for Multicultural Education in the Maucker Union is open to the public. A reception will follow the presentation by Dr. Obery M. Hendricks, Jr.
