Snow, ice covers Southeast Iowa roads

IOWA CITY (KWWL)-- Sunday afternoon, roads in Southeast Iowa continued to deteriorate. The weather is causing a headache for some drivers.

Sunday afternoon, a towing ban went into effect for Johnson County and several others, as Interstate 80 became snow and ice-covered.

The city street department wants residents to know that if a snow emergency is declared, drivers need to obey the signs on streets, and park their vehicles on the appropriate side so the plows can get through.

They say if residents follow those simple rules, they'll avoid tickets and help the city clear the streets faster.

So far, Iowa City has declared two snow emergencies. In December, they handed out 315 citations for drivers who did not move their cars. Earlier this month, they issued another 462 citations. That adds up to about $38,500 in tickets. The money goes into the city's general fund.
