CEDAR FALLS (KWWL) -- During the weekends of February, 50 Boy Scouts to create an almost indestructible camping tool.

This metal casting workshop was put on by the UNI Industrial Technology Center and the Boy Scouts of America.

These boys are learning how to make dutch ovens to earn a special badge.

The workshop is free because local business have donated the supplies.

"Like all boy scout merit badges, they're learning the basics.  The idea is tell them what they're going to learn about, show them what they're going to learn about, and then actually involve them in actually doing it," Winnebago Council Member Jim O'Connor said.

The boys learn how to make the molds out of a sand and plastic mixture.

Then they get to turn the furnace up to 2800 degree and melted recycled iron before filling their molds.

Each boy gets to take a Dutch oven home.
