GOP leaders: Skipping election would help Culver

JOHNSTON (KWWL) - Two Republican leaders say the party will support whomever wins its nomination for governor despite threats by the head of a conservative group to sit out the election if former Gov. Terry Branstad is the GOP nominee.

Doug Gross, the party's 2002 gubernatorial nominee, says social conservatives would only help Democrats if they didn't vote in the November general election. Iowa Christian Alliance President Steve Scheffler says he favors any of the three GOP candidates over Democratic Gov. Chet Culver.

The two spoke Friday during a taping of the Iowa Public Television show "Iowa Press."

They discussed comments by Danny Carroll, head of the Iowa Family Policy Center, that his group would skip the election if Bransted is nominated because he hasn't taken a strong enough stand against gay marriage.
