Tallcorn Jazz Festival attracts young musicians to UNI

CEDAR FALLS (KWWL) -- Young musicians are taking the stage in Cedar Falls.  Students from schools all over play in the Tallcorn Jazz Festival at the University of Northern Iowa.

It's an annual event now in its 55th year.  That makes it the oldest, continuously running high school jazz festival in the nation.

Prizes are awarded, but it's more about the bands growing with the help of comments from professional jazz educators.  Organizers say the university benefits as well.

"It's a great recruiting event, the students get a chance to see the facility and meet some of the faculty and play in our rooms, just have a great day here at UNI," Director of Jazz Studies Chris Merz said.

Tallcorn Jazz continues Saturday.  Events are being held both in Russell Hall and the Gallagher Bluedorn Performing Arts Center.
