Retailers weary of "Cash for Appliances"

MARION (KWWL) -- Cash for Clunkers -- appliance style. It's a lot like the popular auto industry program last year. Starting March 1st, between five and ten-thousand Iowans will qualify to replace their old appliances with a more efficient model.

The Iowa Energy Efficiency Appliance Rebate program is part of the federal stimulus. To be eligible, you must be an Iowa resident, and you must purchase the appliance after March 1st.

There are no income restrictions, but one retailer said the Cash for Appliances program is too limiting, and having Iowans wait until March to buy is hurting business now.

"We've had a lot of customers say, we're going to wait until the first of March, and hopefully get a rebate. Unfortunately the rebates are limited to approximately 7200 rebates for about 2.7 million people in the state," said Patrick Heser.

If you're interested in the rebate program - you might want to contact your energy provider. Alliant Energy for example is offering additional rebates.
