Turning in medication - KWWL - Eastern Iowa Breaking News, Weather, Closings

Fish don't get back pain, don't flush your meds

CEDAR RAPIDS (KWWL) - The Cedar Rapids Police Department is teaming up with HyVee Food Store at 4035 Mt Vernon Rd SE to dispose of outdated and unused medications.

On Saturday, February 20, 2010, from 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m., medications can be turned in at the Mt. Vernon Rd. HyVee.

Flushing these medicines down the drain can result in the contamination of our lakes, rivers and streams. HyVee will place the drugs in a special container and safely disposed of.

In a 2006 study done by the Partnership for a Drug-Free America, about 1 in 5 teens have tried prescription drug painkillers. Teenagers are not getting the second-most abused drugs from dealers on the street. They are getting them from mom and dad, grandma and grandpa, out of their medicine cabinets at home. In 2009, the Cedar Rapids Police Department took 22 reports of overdose on prescription medications.

The public can turn in all outdated or unused prescription medicines, creams, and other over-the-counter medications on Saturday, February 20, 2010, from 10:00 a.m to 1:00 p.m. at HyVee at 4035 Mt Vernon Rd SE. Cedar Rapids Police will be on hand as well as HyVee personnel to answer any questions.
