Restrictions for young drivers

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) -- Two measures before the state Senate are targeting young drivers.

One tightens seat belt requirements and the other would limit the youngest motorists' driving privileges.

On a 39-9 vote, the Senate approved a measure Wednesday that would require anyone under 18 to wear a seat belt no matter where they're sitting in a car.

Current law requires youngsters up to age 11 to be in some sort of restraint system. The Senate-passed measure takes that age to 17.

A second measure would have expanded restrictions on driving for 16- and 17-year-olds, but the Senate did not take final action on that package.
