Medical marijuana approved by Iowa Board of Pharmacy

DES MOINES (KWWL) -- State medical experts are in agreement - marijuana should be legalized for medical use.

The Iowa Board of Pharmacy voted 6-0 in favor of classifying marijuana to a Schedule II drug.  This means it has a high potential for abuse, but also has acceptable medical uses.

The board is the first in the nation to give their approval to medicinal marijuana.  Fourteen other states have legalized medicinal marijuana, the majority have done it through a public vote.

The Board of Pharmacy held four public meetings in the last year, and spent several months studying the scientific research on marijuana.

Members do not expect lawmakers to take immediate action, as they are facing a shortened session and a major budget deficit.
