UPDATE: Cause of Cedar Rapids house fire determined

CEDAR RAPIDS (KWWL) -- Firefighters have determined what caused the house fire in Cedar Rapids that destroyed a home and killed the family's two dogs.

Fire crews were called to the already fully engulfed home at 1920 20th Street NW just before 3:30 p.m. Tuesday afternoon.

A friend of the homeowners had stopped by and saw the house on fire.

The owners, Russell and Desiree Bowers, and their three children were not home at the time of the fire.

The friend attempted to rescue the two dogs, but the fire was already too thick.

The Cedar Rapids Fire Department has found that the fire was caused by faulty electrical wiring.

They say the fire started in the basement ceiling.
