Culver asks Congress to extend jobless benefits

DES MOINES (KWWL) -- Iowa's governor is asking state lawmakers to extend federal benefits for unemployed workers.

Governor Chet Culver says benefits are ending this month for thousands of Iowans.  He'd like to see Congress take action before this happens.

Culver said 76,000 workers will lose their jobless benefits on February 28th.  Most have already exhausted their 13-week federal extension, on top of their initial 26 weeks of help.

Culver would like to see lawmakers extend these benefits again, adding, giving up on the workers and their families is "simply wrong."
