Dispose of outdated and unused medications

CEDAR RAPIDS (KWWL) - The Cedar Rapids Police Department is teaming up with HyVee to dispose of outdated and unused medications. On Saturday, February 20, 2010, from 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m., medications can be turned in at the Mt. Vernon Rd. HyVee.

Flushing medicines down the drain can result in the contamination of our lakes, rivers and streams. Simply bring your prescription drugs to HyVee where they will be placed in a special container and safely disposed of.

In a 2006 study done by the Partnership for a Drug-Free America, about 1 in 5 teens have tried prescription drug painkillers. Teenagers are not getting the second-most abused drugs from dealers on the street. They are getting them from mom and dad, grandma and grandpa, out of their medicine cabinets at home. In 2009, the Cedar Rapids Police Department took 22 reports of overdose on prescription medications.
