D.M. businessman Ruan dies at 96

DES MOINES (KWWL) - Des Moines businessman John Ruan, who built one of the nation's largest trucking companies and had a key role in boosting the city's downtown, has died at age 96.  Ruan died Saturday night after a career in which he started with one truck and built the Ruan Transportation Management Systems. He also owned Bankers Trust, the largest Iowa-based bank.  Ruan was a leader in developing downtown Des Moines, building the 36-story Ruan Center, the Marriott Hotel and 14-story Two Ruan Center. He pushed for construction of the city's skywalk system, connecting most downtown buildings, and the Des Moines Convention Center.  He was a key support of the Des Moines-based World Food Prize.  A private funeral is planned.
