Iowa House works through reorganization plan

DES MOINES (KWWL) - The House is slogging through a blizzard of amendments to a government restructuring measure that backers claim would trim $107 million from state spending.  It wasn't clear Friday when the measure would be approved.  Backers say they hope to next week begin reconciling differences with a $118 million plan already approved in the Senate.  Both measures merge smaller agencies, streamline some larger ones, eliminate dozens of boards and commissions, and centralize purchasing systems and computer operations.  Gov. Chet Culver has told lawmakers the state needs to trim $341 million in spending. Culver says he's cut $140 million using his own authority, leaving it to lawmakers to find another $200 million in savings.
