Residents near Des Moines warned about water

DES MOINES (AP) -- Residents in parts of the Xenia Rural Water District near Des Moines are being warned not to give water from the system to infants younger than 6 months old.

That's because the Iowa Department of Natural Resources says water samples taken Friday showed a nitrite level of 2.14 milligrams per liter, or more than twice the level considered safe.

Infants under 6 months old who drink the water could become seriously ill and even die.

Communities in the warning area include Dallas Center to the south, stretching north to near Ogden, and from Granger on the east to Perry on the west.

The high nitrite is caused by naturally occurring ammonia in wells. The DNR says the system is being flushed and more chlorine added to fix the problem.
