Waterloo Schools: New ticket procedures for East-West game

Posted:

WATERLOO (KWWL) - Friday, the Waterloo School District will announce new procedures for ticket sales and attendance for the sub-state game between East and West High Schools on February 22.  Last Friday, the game between the two schools was stopped early after several fights in the stands among fans.  6 people were arrested after the game ended.  The game was stopped with about two minutes to go and West in front.  The Iowa High School Athletic Association is still considering whether West should get the victory but players and coaches are caught in the middle of a situation that's resulted in more negative press for the school district.

At East High, it's practice as usual for the Trojans.  They're preparing for their next opponent - Cedar Falls.  Amid the shooting and rebounding, there's been a lot of talk about the last game and what happened away from the hoop.

"Even though there was time remaining on the clock, I think it was better to pull players off the floor. I have been caught up in situations like that in Europe when negative fan activity has happened. For players and coaches, it's better to call the game," said East High coach Anthony Thomas.

Thomas says the incident shouldn't mar what should be a healthy rivalry.

"Even if this situation wouldn't have happened, sportsmanship is the biggest key. Those are the things we're going to continue to instill in our players," said Thomas.

Thomas says both schools are working together with district administrators to head off another potential problem in the stands.

"Our school is taking measures, West High is taking measures, downtown is taking measures to make sure it's a positive game so we can get through a basketball game. Everybody's taking the measures necessary to make sure these types of things don't happen again," said Thomas.

The game on February 22 will be held at West High.  Last Friday's game took place at East.
