Drug disposal scheduled in Cedar Rapids

CEDAR RAPIDS (KWWL) -- The Cedar Rapids Police Department are working to keep medications from contaminating our waterways or landing in the hands of teens.

The department is teaming up with HyVee Food Store on Mount Vernon Road for a free drug disposal.  Folks can bring outdated and unused medications to the store Saturday, February 20.  Police and HyVee workers will place the drugs in a container and safely dispose of them.

The Partnership for a Drug-Free America says about one-fifth of teens have used prescription drug painkillers.  And they're getting them from family members out of their home medicine cabinets.

According to environmental experts, flushing drugs down the drain is harmful to the environment.  The medication can end up in our lakes, rivers and streams.

The drug turn-in runs from 10:00AM to 1:00PM.  Police will also answer any questions you may have about disposing of prescription drugs.
