Texting and driving ban passes committee

DES MOINES (KWWL) -- A House committee is approving a limited ban on driving and texting.

Tuesday the House Transportation Committee approved the measure 20-1, which sends it to the full House.

Republican Rep. Dave Tjepkes, a retired Iowa State Patrol trooper from Gowrie, said he believes texting is the worst of many distractions facing drivers.

The measure would delay enforcement for a year after becoming law, requiring officers to only hand out warnings. Violators would be fined a minimum of $65 when the law did take affect.

Republican Rep. Nick Wagner, of Marion, cast the only "no" vote.  He said he doesn't think government intrusion is needed on the issue.
