Winter storm forces yet another snow day

IOWA CITY (KWWL)--For kids across the state, the snow is a good thing.

"It's a lot of fun because I didn't really want to have school today," said Harris Seabold of Iowa City.

For parents, it can cause headaches.

"I wish for no more snow days this year," said Rosanna Seabold, Harris' mother.

Having the kids home, means having to scramble to make arrangements.

"It's a lot of juggling for my husband and I with work," said Seabold.

The snow may also make things difficult for school administrators.

Iowa City schools have only seen four snow days, that compares to some in Central Iowa that have already hit double digits.  Still the days are adding up quickly.

"We had a total of five last year, so we're hoping not to break that record," said Lane Plugge, Iowa City Community School District Superintendent.

Plugge says with a snow day already built into the schedule, Iowa City schools will only have to tack on three days at the end of the year.

Should the district accumulate additional snow days, Plugge says he wouldn't rule out other options like longer school days or Saturday school

"We're going to stay with our calendar but if extenuating circumstances would present themselves, certainly we'd look at other options."

Whatever decisions are made, its likely many parents will be working around future conflicts.

"At this point we're starting to be concerned about summer camps and signup's and how the overlap is going to work if school keeps going further into June," said Seabold.

The large amounts of snow may cause future problems, but for now...

"You can't deny this is a really good time," said Seabold.
