Snow is profitable for some

WATERLOO (KWWL) -- While many are sick of all the constant snow this winter, there are a select few who welcome and even profit from it.

Independent contractors push the snow from driveways, parking lots and sidewalks. Some may even call them the unsung heroes of an Iowa winter, starting their day at 4:00 a.m. to get surfaces clear in time for the public.

Some, like Lonnie Barker of Waterloo, are skipping the heavy machinery and taking a handheld approach.

"It's kind of light and fluffy. It's nice to shovel this kind you can push it and pick it up and throw it away," Barker said.

And even when a machine is doing the heavy lifting, there are still potential obstacles.

"Basically the traffic, whether it's cars that are parked in lots that are in your way or people entering the lot while you're trying to go forward and backward and not hit them."

Despite the hours and obstacles, business is booming for independent plow drivers as Iowa marches toward record snow fall.
