Vote on gay marriage in Iowa will have to wait

DES MOINES (KWWL) -- An effort to amend Iowa's constitution to ban gay marriage has failed, meaning a vote on the ban may have to wait until 2014.

Republicans tried to pull measures out of committees and force a vote on Tuesday morning using procedural moves , but couldn't get enough votes in either the House or the Senate.

These latest developments mean that the earliest Iowans could vote on amending the constitution would be 2014 because it takes votes by two consecutive general assemblies before a proposed constitutional amendment can go to voters.

One lawmaker says legislators already have their hands full with the budget and don't have time to get bogged down with social issues.

The Iowa Supreme Court ruled unanimously last April that civil marriage of gay and lesbian couples are protected.
