Iowa State athletic department donates $125,000 to band

AMES (KWWL) -- The Iowa State football team received a much needed recruiting boost from it's Insight Bowl victory, and now the marching band is benefiting as well.  The ISU athletic department has agreed to donate $125,000, a portion of it's Insight Bowl payout, to allow the Cyclone marching band to purchase new uniforms.

"We are very grateful for the athletics department's generosity and ‘out of box' thinking in finding a way to give our students a wonderful bowl experience as well as providing significant financial support for new uniforms," band director Matt Smith said.

The donation comes in part due to the band's willingness to cut Insight Bowl costs by traveling to the game by bus rather than flying.  Iowa State, which received $1.5 million for participating in the bowl, netted a $400,000 surplus after bowl expenses were deducted.
