UI Hospitals and Clinics plan new outpatient clinic

IOWA CITY (KWWL) - The Iowa Board of Regents gave its initial approval on a plan to build a new outpatient clinic for University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics.

The plan called for a new facility which would likely stand near Interstate 80 and First Avenue in Coralville. The overall cost -- $73-million.

The new facility will give the university more flexibility for expanding services and help provide a better patient experience.

"It can actually change the culture of here because you really want to emphasize a patient friendly environment, and to that, anybody who studies great service models, you know you have to provide a great physician and staff experience," says Chief of Operations Gordon Williams.

The Board of Regents will have to give its final approval of the project in March.  Hospital officials say the building could be open as soon as 2012.
