House approves early retirement incentives

DES MOINES (KWWL) -  The Iowa House has overwhelmingly approved a package of early retirement incentives for state workers.  Supporters say the plan approved Tuesday is designed to save the state up to $60 million a year. Critics say they fear some workers who take advantage of the program will find their way back into a job with the state.  The House approved the measure on a 96-1 vote, sending it back to the Senate which has approved a similar version.  Under the measure, workers who have been with the state for at least 10 years are eligible for the early retirement incentive. They would be paid $1,000 for each year they were with the state, up to a maximum payment of $25,000, with the state continuing to pay its share of health insurance costs for five years.
