Arrest made in Cedar Rapids shooting death

CEDAR RAPIDS (KWWL) -- Cedar Rapids Police have made an arrest in the January 11, 2010 shooting death of Kevin Bell.

Officers arrested Denum Null, 16, at around 10:15 a.m. Friday morning at a house at 1510 4th Avenue SE.

Null has been charged with First Degree Murder for the shooting death of Kevin Bell on January 11, 2010 at an apartment at 113 1st Avenue West.

Null was taken to the Linn County Juvenile Detention Center.

According to police, three men forced their way into Bell's apartment in an apparent home invasion at around 9:30 p.m. on January 11, 2010.

Police aren't sure what happened next, but say that Bell was shot with a handgun in front of six other people.

Bell died at University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics.

Police were originally looking for the three suspects that fled the apartment. There is no word on the search for the other two.

A long time family friend released a statement about Kevin Bell, following his death.

Susan Strait, long time family friend, says, "Kevin Bell moved to Cedar Rapids from Clinton with his twin brother, when they were 17. Kevin loved his friends, had a great sense of humor, was an outdoor person and was very loving and affectionate. Kevin was a people person, who always had a smile on his face and was always willing to help anyone. With the help of his family and friends he had begun to turn his life around in the last year. He was working two jobs, for US Cellular and The Hacienda. The family is requesting privacy at this time as they deal with this devastating loss."
