Teen charged with arson in Bunger Middle School fire

EVANSDALE (KWWL) -- A 14-year old Bunger Middle School student has been arrested and charged with arson in connection with the fire that cancelled classes at the school Thursday.

Jurcilla Johnson, 14, is charged with First Degree Arson for starting the fire in the bathroom.

Emergency crews were called to Bunger Middle School just after 7:45 a.m. Thursday morning.

Teachers had evacuated the school and moved students to Prince of Peace Lutheran Church.

A police resource officer who works in the building took a fire extinguisher into the restroom to put the fire out.

Evansdale Fire Chief Kent Smock says there was moderate smoke damage to the north and west wing of the school, only minor damage to a bathroom stall and the bathroom.

Johnson admitted to starting the fire by lighting toilet paper on fire with matches.

Students were sent home for the day and a basketball game planned at the school was also cancelled.
