Bill offers insurance rate protection

DES MOINES (KWWL) -- Iowa lawmakers are working to protect people who experience extraordinary life events that can send insurance rates soaring.

When families are hit by events such as death or military deployment, many times their credit scores drop and insurance rates rise.

A measure introduced Thursday would let people facing a falling credit score offer evidence they weren't to blame for the drop -- and shouldn't pay higher insurance rates.

It would also force insurance companies to inform customers when their rates are being raised because of a lower credit score.
